| Video Discription | When questioning a Toughbook's waterproof level, you research the water resistance of an electronic device, and you want to look at its rating for Ingress Protection or IP. The Toughbook 31 has a rating of IP65-one of the highest ratings of any commercially available laptop- does that mean it's waterproof? The answer is a bit complicated because of his definition of what waterproof means. He refers to the Ingress Protection or the IP rating of a laptop which is a two-digit number that describes the ruggedness level. For example, the Panasonic Toughbook CF-31 has an IP rating of 65, so it's rated IP65. The first digit, in this case, the 6, represents the protection that the unit has against solid particles like dust and dirt. This first digit can rate anywhere from zero to six, zero being the worst and six being the best. So, in this example the Toughbook CF-31 has a rating of six, meaning that it is dustproof. Now, the second number in the rating represents the protection that the unit has against water and this scales from zero to eight as well. Zero is the worst and eight is the best. The second number is the resistance to water, or in the example that would be the five. In CF-31's case, you could take a water hose and spray it on the unit and it would keep the water out. If that number were a six, it could handle a stronger jet of water, one example being a water hose. If it were a seven, then the laptop could be fully submerged into the water as long as it does not go below a meter, and then eight is able to submerge it below a meter.
