Research at the University of Iowa showed that the force exerted by a triple jumper can be up to to 22 times the athletes body weight. According to Dr Sam Allen, a lecturer in biomechanics at Loughborough University, that’s the equivalent of an athlete briefly weighing 1.7 tonnes / 3600 pounds (or the weight of a fully grown rhino) and briefly standing on one leg. Published papers have proven triple jumpers develop unusually thick thigh and shin bones to enable them to withstand the force of the event. And that is just one of the reasons the triple jump might be the most underrated event in track and field.
