Reeds are gathered from the shores of Lake Turkana and carried for many miles before being placed, still in their bundles onto the frame of the house. Building is a community process and shared equally between the men and the women, and the whole house can be built in a single evening, so it is fresh for the newly wedded couple to move into. After three months a front porch is added which symbolises the fact that the marriage is successful and the family is about to start.
