| Video Discription | In the 1880s, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad began upgrading its trains. William Crush, a passenger agent, had an idea. If the old trains were destroyed in a head-on collision, spectators would pay to see it. On September 15th, 1896, over forty thousand people gathered at a site between Dallas and Houston that was named “Crush.” At around 5 pm, the two trains began rushing at each other, traveling about 45 miles per hour. When they collided, the explosion sent debris flying. Two spectators were killed, and six more were injured. A reporter covering the event also lost an eye when a bolt flew into it. The railroad had to pay thousands of dollars in settlements. But the international attention it received helped increase ticket sales.
