| Video Discription | (20 Apr 1997) Natural Sound As most Israelis hold their breath and await the announcement of the fate of their prime minister, ultra-orthodox Jews prepared for the Passover holiday to begin Monday evening. The Jews in the religious Jerusalem neighbourhood of Mea Shearim came out with their pots, pans and silverware to be dipped in vats of boiling water so as to be made "kosher" for the festival. The bakeries were also working at full blast making final batches of matzoh, the traditional unleavened Passover bread. On the streets of Jerusalem Sunday, ultra-orthodox Jews make final preparations for the week-long festival of Passover. In accordance with religious law, the Jews sterilise their cooking utensils in boiling water so as to remove any trace of food with which they may have come into contact at other times of the year. During the Passover period all orthodox and even many secular Jews replace all their food with provisions specially made for the festival. The tradition is meant to recreate the conditions under which Jews lived three and a half thousand years ago in biblical Egypt. The Passover commemorates the Jews' exodus from slavery under the Pharaohs and the beginning of Jewish nationhood. It is one of the most important and widely observed festivals in the Jewish calendar. The traditional Passover food is the matzoh, or unleavened bread. It serves as a reminder of the haste with which the Jews left Egypt, without even having the time to allow their bread to rise.
