| Video Discription | At four in the morning I had a bit of a eureka moment on how War Thunder does its absolutely excellent mouse flight. Exactly how that mouse cursor rotates was eluding me but I think I’ve finally cracked the code. The secret sauce is that the mouse and camera are two different things. You don't directly control the camera. Instead, you control only the mouse cursor and the camera then smoothly looks at that mouse cursor. Getting the particular way the mouse cursor rotates was the tricky part, as the rotations have to happen in screen space (i.e. moving the mouse left moves the cursor left) no matter what direction you're facing. I also had to build in a slight grace angle where if you're looking directly up or down, the camera won't try to level with the horizon immediately. There could still be tweaks done to the flight logic (e.g. legit PID controllers), but it’s definitely good enough as a proof of concept. This little project is mostly about the mouse aim camera behavior than it is the flight itself. I'm overall EXTREMELY happy with how this turned out. This is all very self-contained so I plan on importing this into Tiny Combat, as well as releasing this as a standalone project on my GitHub. EDIT: Later on I did release it on GitHub.
