What is VGRO? It is Vanguard's Growth Asset Allocation Index Fund which is essentially a Fund of Funds. It consists of 4 Equity Index Funds & 3 Bond Index Funds. There are 12532 Stocks which make up 80% of VGRO and 17370 Bonds which make up 20% of VGRO. These include the following: Vanguard US Total Market Index ETF 33.20% 3586 US stocks Vanguard FTSE Canada All Cap Index ETF 24.10% 180 Canadian Stocks Vanguard FTSE Developed All Cap ex North America Index ETF 16.90% 3,748 Ex North American Stocks Japan, United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Germany,, Australia, Korea, Netherlands, Sweden, Hong Kong Vanguard FTSE Emerging Markets All Cap Index ETF 6.30% 5,018 Emerging Market Stocks China, Taiwan, India, Brazil, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Russia, Malaysia, Mexico Vanguard Canadian Aggregate Bond Index ETF 11.60% Vanguard Global ex-US Aggregate Bond Index ETF CAD-hedged 4.50% Vanguard US Aggregate Bond Index ETF CAD-hedged 3.40% Why is VGRO is good investment? Because its diversified into 12532 Stocks it protects against individual security risk. Geographic Diversification across countries also protects us against lost decades where a single country may not perform well for up to 10 to 20 years at a time. The 80% Equity allocation allows me to capture the Markets Return and as a young investor with a long time horizon I believe this is right for me. The 20% Bond allocation is to slightly reduce Volatility. It will not perform as well as a 100% equity portfolio however its insurance against a 50% market decline. This is what is called a One Decision Fund, after making the decision to invest our job is over which is protection against my own fear and emotions that may lead me to make a poor decision in scary times. The following happens automatically within the fund without any active management: Rebalancing Automatically between stocks and bonds Rebalancing Automatically between stocks Sell high and Buy low And best of all, all of these benefits come at a very Low fee of 0.25% ($25 per $10,000 invested).
