He sat down with Brandon Frazin, the Director of Vintage here at Bob's Watches, to discuss a few of his favorite watches - a truly unforgettable Holy Grail that we're excited to share with you, our faithful subscribers. For the video, Paul donned a coveted "red" Submariner ref. 1680 on his wrist. Reference 1680 was famously the first Submariner to feature a calendar display on the dial. Because the series was initially developed for professional divers, it didn't need a date when it first came to market. However, as popularity for the Submariner grew among collectors of all walks of life, not just underwater adventurers, it just made sense to add the iconic jump date to the dial. It was produced from the late 1960s until the late 1970s/early 1980s and ran alongside the dateless references 5512 and 5513. Several dial variations came to market during that time that can best be defined as red or white dials. Reference 1680s produced between roughly 1967 and 1975 featured a red Submariner logo and are now referred to as red dials. Examples produced after 1975 featured a white Submariner logo to match the rest of the text on the dial. These watches are referred to as white dials. From there, the watch collecting community defined several minute variations between the red and white dials, each divided into "marks." The red dial has seven marks, while the white dial has three. Differences between these dials come down to the smallest details in some cases, including the exact placement of the font, the typeface, and the order of the wording. Some variations are more valuable than others based on rarity. As you can imagine, the 1680 Rolex Sub can be an interesting watch to collect. We aren't surprised that Paul has one of these vintage staples in his vault. There's no doubt about that. However, the Rolex Submariner 6200 - aka The King Sub - is even more sought-after. It was among the very first Submariners ever produced, hitting the market in 1954. Many believe that Rolex only produced about 300 examples of this rare Submariner, making it one of the most collectible references in the entire collection. While it's also known as the "King Sub," Rolex enthusiasts also refer to reference 6200 as the "Big Crown" after the robust 8mm Brevet winding crown, compared to the 6mm crown on its counterparts produced around the same time. It features an Explorer-style dial with the collection's signature baton and 3/6/9 Arabic hour markers. This edition of the Submariner is also the first time the Submariner was ever produced with the iconic Mercedes hands, replacing the pencil-style hands that preceded it. During its limited production run, Rolex made a few dial variations for reference 6200, including with or without the "Submariner" logo above the 6-hour marker, big or small logos, and those with the distinction "Oyster Perpetual" or "Officially Certified Chronometer." However, most examples of reference 6200 don't have the Submariner logo on the dial at all, simply Rolex with the distinction "Oyster Perpetual" underneath. This minimal design only adds further to the immense appeal of the famous Rolex King Sub. The dial also features a gold "Gilt" dial due to the printing process. Other features include a 200-meter depth rating, an automatic movement, and a 37mm case. Paul's example features a no hash-mark bezel and does not have the distinction "Officially Certified Chronometer" on the dial. It is considered the absolute Holy Grail of luxury watches.
