| Video Discription | Can your kids retire by just investing solely into the S&P 500? Buying just one fund for life? Buying VOO and never having to worry about investing in other index funds or stocks? Let's find out... Can you or your kids retire by just buying an S&P 500 ETF? No other stock holdings, just a basic S&P 500 ETF? Well if we take the time look at the historical average of the S&P 500, it has averaged roughly 10% each year since 1920s. Compared to your average returns when your money is sitting in a high yield bank account these are pretty solid returns. Let's run some numbers for your kids to see if it would be possible to ONLY invest in the S&P 500 and to see if they can comfortably retire with VOO as their only stock holding! Let's say you are a school teacher for this example making roughly $50,000 per year and you invest 10% of your teacher salary, that comes out to roughly $417 each month that you can invest for your children. If we take that $417 and put it into an S&P 500 ETF like VOO assuming a 10% average annual return, here is what you investments would look like every 10 years: After just 10 years in the S&P 500 your kids will have: $85,420 After just 20 years in the S&P 500 your kids will have: $316,656 After just 30 years in the S&P 500 your kids will have: $942,623 After just 40 years in the S&P 500 your kids will have: $2,637,139 That's right your kids could possibly have just over $2.6 million after 40 years of compounding interest has taken hold from of simply investing into the S&P 500. I wish my parents knew this when I was born! Now, let's say you are married or have a partner and you want to increase the investments for your kids each month to invest a total of $1,000 each month: After just 10 years in the S&P 500 your kids will have: $204,844 After just 20 years in the S&P 500 your kids will have: $759,368 After just 30 years in the S&P 500 your kids will have: $2,260,487 After just 40 years in the S&P 500 your kids will have: $6,324,078 That's right this time your kids could possibly have just over $6 million after 40 years of compounding interest has taken hold from of simply investing $1,000 per month into the S&P 500. I wish my parents knew this when I was born! So could your kids retire by just investing in an ETF like VOO or a similar S&P 500 ETF? Well, if they can live off of $2.6 - $6 Million in their retirement account I think it's safe to say, YES! If the 10% average return remains consistent for the S&P over the next 40 years there is a good chance your kids could live off of the 4% rule and safely withdraw $104,000 - $240,000 per year.
