| Video Discription | Learn the difference between the push and pull techniques while MIG welding — and which is better for you and your application. Fabricator Peter Torres of BS Industries shows examples of the push method and the pull method using his Millermatic® 252 MIG welder. In most instances, pushing or pulling is up to your personal preferences or comfortability. With the push technique, your weld should lay flat — and should be easier to control dime size, bead size and puddle size. With the pull technique, the wire should drive into a hot weld puddle versus hitting the cooler base, as you would in push welding. With the 75/25 settings Torres is using, the pull method provides a deeper penetration than the push method. Torres prefers the pull method for visibility when filling gaps or uneven surfaces. Miller recommends reducing your voltage and wire speed as needed when filling gaps or holes to prevent over-penetration which can exacerbate the problem. — but regardless of which technique you use, ensuring you are comfortable is critical for a better-quality weld.
