| Video Discription | Linda Hurtado: A free service to improve your access to local medical care is up and running in Tampa Bay. ZocDoc is the service and app that can be a new tool in your emergency health kit. We're taking action for your health tonight by showing you how it works and how it helped one local mom. Dr. Panos Vasiloudes: How did you find us? Linda: Lisa Yob needed a dermatologist for her 15-year-old daughter. A new website and mobile app, aimed at improving access to local medical care, led her to the Academic Alliance in Dermatology, called ZocDoc.com Lisa: It was convenient because you're able to put in your insurance company and our local zip code and address and it popped up and we knew exactly what doctor we were absolutely going to use. Linda: The service also allows you to see real-time appointments and see a doctor they say within 24 to 72 hours. Jessica Aptman: ZocDoc started in 2007 as a free service for patients to find a dentist in New York City to book an appointment and get in to see them quickly. It grew from there and now we're in 18 cities, including Tampa, today. Linda: How is this different than just googling them on the internet? Jessica: Sure. So we offer verified patients reviews, so you can see other patients' reviews of that doctor and you can actually book with them right away through the internet. Lisa: And our 15-year-old was able to -- it's so user-friendly -- she's able to go on it. Linda: And for this mom, who says she's late for everything, she liked the text reminder. Lisa: The appointment was at 2:45. At 1:43, it pinged on my phone. I looked down, it said "We're looking forward to seeing you today at --" Had the address, I jumped out of my seat, picked up my daughter, put in the address into the GPS, and it had the phone number in case I had issues. Linda: And she says, she arrived on time. Dr. Vasiloudes: Number one, the patients who are looking for this service are people who need really something. It's a patient who has something acute, maybe poison ivy, an infection, and they provide for way more interesting cases than the routine scheduled follow-ups. Linda: Doctors like Dr. Vasiloudes have to pay to be part of ZocDoc's network. So a possible downside is you only get access to the docs on board, but there's no cost to the patient. Right now ZocDoc offers appointments with many local primary care doctors, ob/gyns and dermatologists throughout the Tampa Bay area.
