They were introduced to ensure all patients with cancer within a geographic region were treated within standards of care. The function of MDT meetings has since evolved. For example, being used for the discussion of cases where patients cannot be treated exactly to standards of care, or for difficult cases where treatment decisions may benefit from MDT discussion. Additional benefits to MDT meetings include collection of data on outcome and standards of care. They also form an opportunity for the team to meet face to face outside clinic, giving binding benefits, and allowing for managerial, academic, or teaching-related agendas to be met.
