Too often, women are confined to the sidelines of society and history. Their achievements, importance, and impact are routinely overshadowed, if not trivialized by man-centric perspectives and mentalities. The glass ceiling has proved particularly difficult to break for women musicians and especially women composers, whose gender and even sexuality tend to be discussed before the quality of their works. Their output is also almost always still compared to those of men composers, and the general public would be hard-pressed to even name a single woman composer. Even violists themselves tend to not be aware of the plethora of extraordinary, original, and captivating works that deserve to be discovered and shared, especially those composed by women composers, that are still too rarely performed or taught. This lecture will therefore present a global overview of research and pedagogical ressources, and will feature
sonatas, concertos, and chamber works by composers (most of whom are also violists), from Beatrice Mattei to Polina Nazaykinskaya, and including Rebecca Clarke, Lillian Fuchs, Anne Lanzelotti, Jocelyn Pook, Jessica Meyer, Sally Beamish, Katrina Wreede and Nokuthula Ngwenyama, with the hopes that their programming might become the new normal.
