The session leaders are Norbert Kremer, Ph.D. of GDG Cloud Boston and Jessica Rudd, Ph.D. of GDG Atlanta. In this session, we discussed some recent software failures such as the 2024 CrowdStrike outage and the 2023 FAA NOTAM database outage. We looked at how blue/green or canary deployment models might have been used in similar scenarios, and how risks in database migration projects might be mitigated. We next did a survey of all of the Google Cloud database products. We noted that Firestore, a NoSQL document database used to build mobile and web apps, is not covered in the SkillsBoost labs in this learning path. So, we'll add some of our own material to cover this important product. Also, Google Cloud does not offer a graph database as a managed service, so we pointed out that Neo4j and TigerGraph are available as 3rd party applications within the Google Marketplace. To answer the question "Which database should I use," we introduced Priyanka Vergadia's Google Sketchnote, that maps many use cases to Google Database products. A brief history of relational database technology was reviewed, pointing out the immense contributions of Turing Award Winner Michael Stonebraker, and the immense importance of PostgreSQL as the premier open source relational DBMS. Andy Pavlo's lecture series at CMU on the history of databases was mentioned. PostgreSQL is surrounded by a thriving open source software community. As examples of this, screenshots and live demos were used to showcase 3 tools: PgAdmin for Database Administrators (DBAs), DBeaver for database developers (SQL coders) and pgModeler for Data Architects (database designers). Raphael Araújo e Silva, the person behind pgModeler, has done a great job to develop an open source software package that compares very favorably with high-end expensive CASE tools, with forward-engineering and reverse-engineering and database comparison functionalities. The live demo of pgModeler used the open-source code to build the software on Linux Mint Cinnamon edition and feature a remote desktop connection from a Windows PC to the Linux Mint PostgreSQL server. Good SQL skills and good data architecture skills reinforce each other. Data architecture starts with solid principles, but some designs need to be modified with pragmatic considerations such as performance and cost. Neither database schemas nor SQL code exist in a vacuum.
