Emperor Shah Jahan started building Red Fort on 12 May 1638, when he finally decided to shift his capital from Agra to Delhi. Originally red and white, the design of Red Fort is credited to the architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori, who is also known for construction of the Taj Mahal. The fort is known to represent the peak in Mughal architecture under Shah Jahan, and combines Persianate palace architecture along with Indian traditions. So, it can be called as Indo Islamic architecture. The fort was plundered with a lot of its artwork and jewels when Nadir Shah's attacked the fort in 1739. Most of the marble structures in the fort were known to be demolished by the Britishers following the Indian Revolt of 1857. The defensive walls of the Red Fort were largely undamaged, and the fortress was known to be used as a garrison. On 15 August 1947, the India's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, raised the Indian flag above the Lahori Gate. Every year on Independence Day of India (15 August), the Prime Minister hoists the Indian tricolour flag at the main gate of the Fort and delivers a speech from its ramparts.
