Welcome to the final sermon in our enlightening series, "The Promise." Over the past few weeks,
we've delved into the profound promise of the Holy Spirit's infilling, clearing any confusion surrounding this essential aspect of our faith. Today, we journey through the Old Testament to uncover symbolic foreshadowings of the three baptism experiences we learn about in the New Testament.
1. The First Baptism: Salvation and Repentance
Foundation: Abraham - Known as the "Father of the Faithful," Abraham's story begins in Genesis 12:1, where God calls him to leave his homeland, symbolizing the first step of salvation and repentance. When we accept Jesus, we leave our old kingdom behind and become citizens of a new, heavenly kingdom (Colossians 1:13-14).
Faith and Righteousness - Abraham believed God, and it was counted as righteousness (Romans 4:3). This act of faith represents our own decision to follow Jesus, repent, and leave our past behind.
2. The Second Baptism: Water Baptism
The Covenant with Abraham - Genesis 15:17-18 describes a covenant-cutting ceremony, where God alone walks through the sacrifice, foreshadowing the water baptism. Romans 6:4 explains that through baptism, we are buried with Christ and raised to live a new life.
Passing Through the Waters - This act of "passing through" the sacrifice symbolizes our passing through the waters of baptism, marking a death to our old self and a resurrection into a new life with Christ.
3. The Third Baptism: Infilling of the Holy Spirit
The Name Change: Abraham to Abraham - In Genesis 17:5, God changes Abram’s name to Abraham, adding the "ha" sound, which in Hebrew signifies "ruah," meaning spirit, breath, and wind. This change symbolizes the infilling of the Holy Spirit, transforming Abraham’s identity.
Empowerment of the Israelites - After their deliverance from Egypt, the Israelites experience miraculous empowerment in battles, symbolizing the Holy Spirit's power in our lives. Whether it’s the parting of the Jordan River or the fall of Jericho’s walls, these events illustrate the supernatural assistance we receive when filled with the Holy Spirit.
Symbolic Foreshadowing of the Three Baptisms
The Tabernacle Rituals - In the Old Testament, the high priest had to go through three steps before entering the Holy of Holies: sacrifice, washing, and anointing with oil. These steps symbolize the three baptisms: salvation and repentance (sacrifice), water baptism (washing), and the infilling of the Holy Spirit (anointing with oil).
Paul’s Explanation
1 Corinthians 10:1-2 - Paul correlates the Israelites' experiences with our baptism experiences, stating they were baptized into Moses, the sea, and the cloud, representing Jesus as our deliverer, water baptism, and the Holy Spirit, respectively.
Invitation and Encouragement
Embrace All Three Baptisms - It’s my prayer that each of you experiences all three baptisms. Your spiritual journey is incomplete without them. Just as the Israelites were guided by the cloud and fire, we need the Holy Spirit to lead us through life's challenges.
A Place at the Table - Like the man who missed out on the ship’s meals because he didn’t know they were included, many Christians miss the blessings of the Holy Spirit’s infilling. Today, I encourage you to remove any barriers, request the gift, receive it by faith, and release your tongue to God.
Conclusion
Isaiah 43:1-2 - These verses beautifully summarize our journey through the three baptisms: redemption (salvation and repentance), passing through waters (water baptism), and not being burned by fire (infilling of the Holy Spirit).
Call to Action
First Baptism - If you haven’t yet, take the first step: surrender your life, repent, and accept Jesus' work at Calvary.
Second Baptism - Embrace water baptism, symbolizing your new life in Christ.
Third Baptism - Seek the infilling of the Holy Spirit for empowerment, comfort, and guidance in your spiritual journey.
