| Video Discription | (3 May 1999) English/Nat British Prime Minister Tony Blair continued his visit to Macedonia on Monday, meeting British troops stationed in the country. Around four thousand British troops have been stationed in Macedonia, originally as part of the extraction force. They later provided bring food and shelter to the victims of Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic's policy of ethnic cleansing. The visit is Blair's first to the region since he took office. British troops in Macedonia were visited by Prime Minister Tony Blair on Monday. Blair and his wife Cherie toured military camps in the country and chatted to ordinary soldiers as well as senior officers. In sweltering heat, Blair inspected military hardware including tanks and artillery. Senior officers explained their mission to the Prime Minister, while conversation with the other ranks seemed to centre on conditions in the camp. The visit is part of NATO's efforts to avoid any discord between the Western alliance and Macedonia's coalition government, which is under pressure from the refugee onslaught and groups opposed to NATO's growing presence in the country. Macedonia has had to cope with an influx of over 190-thousand refugees since the beginning of the Balkan crisis and Kosovans fleeing from their homes are still crossing the border in large numbers. Addressing troops after his tour of their base Blair told them that they had the wholehearted support of the British public. He also said that NATO's will to succeed in the Balkan war would not be diverted. SOUNDBITE: (English) "But I have given this message to Milosevic over the past month, past six weeks and I give it here again now, here to you, that we will do now what is ever necessary to make sure that the demands that NATO have put forward are demands that are achieved. And he must know that the determination to make sure that those demands are acceded to in full will yield to nothing." SUPER CAPTION: Tony Blair, British Prime Minister But the troops, he said, had a humanitarian, as well as a military role. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We are here for a very clear purpose. And that purpose is to be part of an operation that will prevent the ethnic cleansing, the racial genocide, the appalling acts of evil brutality that have been carried out against defenceless people in Kosovo just a short distance away from here." SUPER CAPTION: Tony Blair, British Prime Minister Blair left the base to be shown round a refugee camp, currently home to thousands of Kosovans displaced by the violence in their home province. The allies have promised increased aid to Macedonia to help them cope with the influx of refugees. There are presently around 170-thousand refugees in camps in the Balkan state.
