Aidid's two main rivals have declared unilateral ceasefires on their own radio stations and one of them, Ali Mahdi Mohamed, said he was ready to improve dialogue with Aidid's successors. The capital Mogadishu was quiet the day after Aidid's burial which was attended by thousands of mourners. The Somali capital, Mogadishu was carrying on as normal after the funeral of faction leader Mohamed Farrah Aidid. He died of injuries sustained in fighting last week. His death may offer Somalia it's best chance for peace in many years. On Friday, radio stations run by his two main rivals announced that their fighters would observe unilateral ceasefires. The stations are run by Ali Mahdi Mohamed, who controls north Mogadishu, and Osman Hassan Ali Atto, a former Aidid financial backer who formed his own militia. The day after the ceasefire announcement, the streets were quiet -- although the signs of the factional fighting that has torn the country apart are everywhere. This street marks the green line which divides Mogadishu into its north and south factions. The possibility of talks between those political factions, which number as many 15, was also mentioned by the rival faction leaders. But they said talks would depend on whether the team named to replace Aidid was ready to negotiate. SOUNDBITE: "We made an appeal to the Somali people, we asked to stop the war, to put down the weapons, to come together, to sit together, and settle the differences through a peaceful dialogue. We are not for war, and what we hope the new leader will join and accept the peaceful dialogue." SUPER CAPTION: Ali Mahdi Mohamed, Rival Warlord But the four man team appointed to take over from Aidid hasn't responded to the offer and has not yet named a successor. Aidid's funeral was a simple Muslim ceremony attended by thousands of his supporters and heavily armed militiamen. They lined the streets of the capital to see the former general's coffin, draped in the Somali flag and covered with flowers, drive past. The route took the dead leader's body through his south Mogadishu stronghold. Despite the immediate announcement of a ceasefire, it is still too early -- in this country of shifting alliances -- to tell whether Aidid's death will bring to an end a recent outbreak of factional fighting or merely fuel a new round of Somalia's civil war.
