| Video Discription | (4 Mar 1995) English/Nat The Somali warlord, General Mohammed Aidid, has said that U-N intervention into his country, has sabotaged any chance of political reconciliation. The general was speaking from his hideout in the Somali capital Mogadishu after U-S marines pulled out the country - ending two years of U-N involvement. The general's comments were made as the last of the U-S marines withdrew from Somalia. As the troops boarded the military vessels which would take them home, many found it difficult to hide their relief, at leaving a country which had regarded them with open contempt. On Thursday, US marines escorted the last of the United Nations peacekeepers from the shores of Mogadishu. It was the final chapter in a two billion dollar intervention which aimed to end a civil war and the starvation of the Somali people. The Americans and the international community paid a price for their relief effort - 42 American troops were killed and over a hundred UN soldiers. The Pentagon has confirmed that no American ships or planes will remain in the area. During the final withdrawal, marines exchanged fire with Somali gunmen. It's thought that at least four Somalis were killed during these skirmishes. In an effort to contain the rising tension within the country, general Aidid has assured aid workers that humanitarian deliveries will not be interrupted by the American withdrawal. He's also embroiled in negotiations with his political rivals. But the fear amongst observers is that there could be localized fighting amongst the clans over the control of the country's main port and airport, which are important sources of revenue.
