| Video Discription | 22-yr-old Joe DiMeo had the world’s first successful face and hands transplant. Joe had been badly burned in a car crash in 2018, with burns on 80% of his body. He spent months in a coma and had 20 reconstructive surgeries. The final transplant surgery was a gruelling 23hrs with 80 doctors. Now DiMeo is relearning how to smile, blink, pinch and squeeze. He will be on lifelong medications to avoid rejecting the transplants and also need continued rehab to gain sensation and function. DiMeo now says he feels like he’s been given a “second chance at life”.
