Hill, MD, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, gives updates on key developments in the use of neuroprotection in ischemic stroke patients undergoing endovascular thrombectomy (EVT). To limit neuronal injury following stroke, two strategies are adopted: rapid resumption of blood flow to neurons and protecting neurons that are deprived of sufficient blood supply. Enhancing reperfusion strategies involves developing more effective devices and the application of pharmaceutical agents to facilitate the opening of arteries. Meanwhile, neuroprotective agents mitigate neuronal damage when blood supply is limited. Nerinetide is one of several compounds currently under investigation, with hope to find a molecule that will compliment the effectiveness of EVT in patients with ischemic stroke. This interview took place at the World Stroke Congress (WSC) 2023 in Toronto, Canada.
